What is Kendo?

Kendo, meaning 'the way of the sword’, is a modern Japanese martial art of sword-fighting based on traditional Japanese swordsmanship called Kenjutsu.
 
Invented in the 1900s, the aim of Kendo training is to mould the mind and body to cultivate a steady and firm attitude, and the martial art is one of the foremost and widely respected of Japanese Budo disciplines.
 

Levels

 
Novice : 
In Kendo the beginner must learn the basic stances or 'kamae' associated with the use of the sword, the mechanics of the cut itself and basic attack and defence techniques prior to going into armour and taking part in actual contests.
We will provide you with a shinai (a bamboo sword) for you to practice with until you decide that you want to progress in which case you can purchase one.
All you need to bring are loose fitting clothes, t-shirt and tracksuit pants, or shorts, an open mind and a willingess to learn.
 
Advanced :  
Advanced Students will practice the six techniques of Shikake waza aswell as Oji waza techniques

*Do(Breast plate)
*Kote(Gloves)
*Tare(Waist)
*Hakama(Jacket)
 
When students first train, the equipment in the 'Mandatory' list is required. These are available from us  If we don't have them, we can order on your behalf, just ask one of our staff for further information.

We have an open door policy; whether you're a total new beginner, experienced martial arts veteran or just want to observe to get a feel, just turn up to a class of your choice and we'll be happy to assist you to kick start your aims.
